Parts of Braces

Bands are steel rings which are fitted around the molars and sometimes premolars. The bands are glued into position with dental cement.

The brackets hold the archwire against each tooth. The archwire fits into a slot in the bracket. Brackets are glued to the surface of the tooth.

The main wires or archwires, are shaped specifically to fit around the arch into the bracket slots. Teeth move from the pressure that is applied by the archwires.

Elastics are rubber bands that are used to apply force to the teeth to help them move. Sometimes they are worn from the upper braces to the lower braces, sometimes they are worn only in the upper or lower braces.

The elastics we use have boy's names (eg Chuck, Fred, Dave). If you need more elastics, let us know which 'name' you need so that we can send you the correct ones.

Hooks are small attachments on the brackets used to attach elastics.

Coil Spring

The coil spring fits between brackets and over the archwire, and is used to push teeth apart to make space.
